A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton-Porter ($18)
Published by Hodder and Stoughton, London 1953
Cloth bound, hard cover, 320 pages, 115mm x 180mm.
First published in 1912, it is considered to be a classic of Indiana literature. It is a novel about conservation and the need to preserve our natural wetland written, one might say, before its time, but then it might also be the right time before the loss of our natural wilderness.
It is set around the Indian Limberlost swamp, under threat from over logging and oil extraction.
Woven into the plot is the story of a young, impoverished woman with a widowed mother who refuses to cut down a single tree in the forest. It is also a quest for education, a love story, a complex family story and in the end, a good old American happy ending story about reconciliation.
The book is in fairly good condition.
