William Earl Johns (1893 - 1968) was a Flying Officer (Flight Lieutenant) in the Royal Air Force.
He began his career in the Infantry with service in Gallipoli and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. In 1918 he was transferred to France to serve as a bomber pilot, and was shot down by German fighters and spent the remaining months in a German Prisoner of War camp.
After discharge from the services at the commencement of his writing career he gave himself a small promotion to Captain to appeal to his young audience.
Wanting to write authentic stories about flying he created a fictional airman, James Bigglesworth, in 1932.
Ninety eight titles later and he died mid sentence writing his 99th title.
The book is in excellent order.
