Sold - K910N Australian Colonial (1860s) Parliamentary Ink well
Australian Colonial (1860s) Parliamentary Ink well ($390)
From Victorian Parliament House, on a stand of English oak.
This is an important historic piece.
290mm x 185mm x H: 200mm
The well rotates on the stand. It would have been used to 'sign off' on legislation as it passed.
It was saved from destruction by the Parliamentary Sergeant at Arms in the 1960s when it was decided to 'modernise' Parliament House. During that process many treasures were destroyed or sent to the tip. The Sergeant at Arms saw the long term importance in the items and saved many. When he died they were passed on to a local pastoral family.
The inkwell has minor damage to the rim, which can be repaired by Tyson's China Repairs.
The shards of glass remain in the well.
