Susie Cooper is regarded as one of the great English ceramic artists and designers of the mid C20. In the 1930s she exhibited at the British Industries Fair and quickly became a household name. No home was regarded as being complete without Susie Cooper pottery.
Due perhaps to her agricultural background her designs relied heavily on natural elements and fundamental patterns. Leaves, grass, feathers and other organic elements became her staples.
After her death in 1995 the director of the City Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent wrote that "There is no one to fill the shoes of Susie Cooper. Her work is unique. No work compares with hers, either for its ground breaking technical improvements, for its practicality, for its elegance or for its far-sightedness."
The logo for Susie Cooper Pottery became the leaping deer, which darts across this pitcher.
