When we see the title 'War and Peace' we generally think of Tolstoy whose epic was published in 1869.
Charlotte Maria Tucker's (1821 - 1893) children's adventure story 'War and Peace' was published in 1884. It is rare to find copies of it.
The story of the author who published under the A.L.O.E (A Lady of England) is an excellent writer and her life story is as interesting as her many novels. She was a woman of faith and conscience. An educationalist and missionary from a family well versed in Anglo Indian business matters. From a young age she worked and taught in the Ragged Schools as a workhouse visitor and in a mission to Jews. At age 44 she became a missionary and education worker in India.
While she was a missionary, her stories underplayed religion and emphasised humour, fact and earnestness.
The book, while in fragile condition, is complete. It is well worth preserving.
