M2193N Two 1939 - 1950s Goldscheider Figures ($45 each)
Comment: Goldscheider’s were originally from Vienna, Austria. Their company was regarded as producing the very best Art Nouveau design ceramic figures in the world.
As they were followers of the Jewish faith, they were targeted by the Nazis.
The family fled Austria. One brother migrating to America and the other to England.
The brother who migrated to England entered into a partnership with the English Myott pottery, to continue his work.
At the end of the War thy returned to Austria but conditions had changed and they were never really able to recover.
What intrigues about these figures is that they were made during the 1940s, perhaps at the height of or just after the war.
They are of Jolly gentlemen, but if you examine the detail of the hand painted faces, they contain an element of underlying sadness.
